Step by step usage

  1. Enter actual period data

Replace the sample values with your own business's data for the same date range and the same unit of measure.

  2. Read the result and assumptions together

The tool calculates the contribution margin and sales quantity of the products and divides them into four menu engineering groups based on the average of the two measures. Examine the result not just as a single number but for its sensitivity to change in inputs.

  3. Save the scenario and measure again

Once you make a decision, write down the input and the date. Analyze categories separately. Read the absolute contribution together with the ratio. Give the new product sufficient observation time.

What does this tool calculate?

Classify menu items according to profitability and popularity from sales quantity, sales price and product cost.

formula

Contribution margin = selling price - product cost; class = number of sales and position of contribution relative to the menu average

Calculation method

The tool calculates the contribution margin and sales quantity of the products and divides them into four menu engineering groups based on the average of the two measures.

Worked example

Product A: high sales / high contribution. Product B: high sales / low contribution. Product C: low sales / high contribution. Result: A is classified as star, B as workhorse, C as puzzle; price, cost and visibility action are selected based on product role.

How should the result be interpreted?

Analyze categories separately. Read the absolute contribution together with the ratio. Give the new product sufficient observation time

Common usage mistakes

Using turnover as contribution margin. Collecting all products from different period. Looking at the class and forgetting the cost of the operation

Limits of the model

The four groups do not fully model customer preferences, lead time, brand role, and cross-selling impact.

Is your data safe?

Calculation and file analysis runs in your browser. The operation files you upload are not sent to a server by this tool.

Frequently asked questions
