Guide to preventing shift conflicts in markets and stores
Ways to reduce shift conflicts on retail and grocery teams, taking into account employee availability, leaves, and peak hours.
Shift overlap in store teams isn't just about two people writing at the same time. Lack of people in the wrong role, putting an employee on leave, or leaving an inexperienced team at the closing are also conflicts.
See role-based coverage
Cashier, department, warehouse and responsible roles are not the same number of people. Check the plan with role coverage, not number of people.
Collect permits and availability before planning
If employee eligibility arrives after publication, the plan will be reopened. Establish a weekly pre-plan availability collection routine.
Maintain balance of experience in closing
Remaining only new employees at closing may create operational risks. An experienced person must be present at critical hours.
Summary
The correct question in a retail shift plan is “how many people are there?” but “Is there the right person in the right role?” is the question.
