Shiftmate

What is an open shift and how to close it quickly?

Guide explaining the concept of open shifts, creating a suitable employee pool, and the manager-approved shift closing process.

An open shift is a shift that does not yet have an assigned employee but needs to be filled for branch coverage. If it is not managed correctly, it turns into a last minute crisis.

Make open shift visible early

If the vacant shift is hidden from the team, the solution will be delayed. Making it open so that the appropriate people can see it will increase speed.

Role suitability is a must

Not every employee can take every open shift. Role, experience and hours per week should be checked.

Final approval should remain with the administrator

Even if the employee wishes to take the open shift, manager approval is required to balance overtime and coverage.

Summary

There should be clear shift management and a controlled flow of requests and approvals, not group messaging.
