How to set up a 3-shift system?
Guide to coverage, rest, role and total hours control in teams working 24 hours a day with morning, evening and night shifts.
The triple shift system provides 24-hour coverage; But just writing three time intervals is not enough. Turnover, night load, competence and hours per week must be managed together.
Clarify shift boundaries
08:00-16:00, 16:00-00:00 and 00:00-08:00 are common examples. If opening and turnover time is required, allow planned overlap between shifts.
Visibly distribute the night load
Also track the number of night shifts per employee. Even if the total hours are equal, the team that constantly works at night may lose the perception of a fair plan.
Add handover to shift
Cash, stock, open duty and malfunction notes must be transferred to the next shift in writing. The turnover period must be visible in the plan and timesheet.
Summary
In a triple shift, information transfer between shifts is as much a part of the operation as the plan.
